Credit card skimmer — For the second time this year, someone placed a credit card skimming device on a gas pump at the Marathon station at Bowling Green Road in Scottsville.

From Feb. Once a credit card is used at the pump, thieves then used stolen credit card information at several locations in the state, including Kroger, a liquor store in Bowling Green and at the Hopkinsville Wal-Mart, according to a news release from the Scottsville Police Department.

Here's how the scam works. A thief installs a small, nearly undetectable device on the portion of a gas pump where a credit or debit card is inserted.

That device steals the information off the cards' magnetic strips. That information can then be loaded onto another card with a magnetic strip and used anywhere that particular card is accepted. The legitimate cardholder still has his or her card in possession, but the information has been stolen from it. The cardholder doesn't know their card has been used until he or she sees the charges. In this case, just like the case investigated earlier this year in Scottsville, the thief or thieves were able to place the device on a pump and then later remove it without detection by gas station employees, Scottsville Detective John Rose said.

Police haven't determined if the suspects in these cases are the same as the suspects in the case earlier this year, Rose said. Law enforcement officers recommend that before you use a pay-at-the pump system to closely examine the card reader and give it a slight tug to see if it is loose, which would indicate tampering.

Rose recommends an additional safeguard. SPD is asking anyone who used a credit or debit card to pay at the pump in Scottsville to closely monitor their financial accounts for fraudulent purchases and alert police to any fraudulent activity. Automobile theft — A man who has been staying at the Drury Inn for the last three weeks told Bowling Green police Sunday that his car was stolen.

The man parked his Hyundai Accent in the parking lot of the Scottsville Road hotel near the northeast corner of the building. He said he had last seen it at noon that day when he took his dogs out, according to Bowling Green Police Department records.
